Actions

  • Breath in deeply and hold it - May be released as a deep sigh
  • Visible effort to stay calm and not lose control
  • Going through the motions when supposed to be working - Looking busy, without accomplishing much
  • Busying oneself to burn off nervous energy or to divert one's attention
  • Doing tasks that don't need to be done, or can buy space or time - "Let me go do that for you."

Speech/Verbalization/Interaction with Others

  • Deep sigh, may be exaggerated or over-dramatized if trying to get attention or to communicate, "What a burden!"
  • Communicating impatience with others by taking over a project, as if to say that their efforts are not adequate
  • Rudeness/Snottiness, especially towards those seen as inferior or inadequate to the job at hand
  • Mouth opening and closing, without saying anything, as if reconsidering what you're about to say or toning it down to avoid conflict or problems as a result of saying the wrong thing or something inappropriate
  • Animal noises ("Uh-huh", "Mmm") in an attempt to pretend to pay attention, even if mind is elsewhere

  • Finding a reason to leave/excuse oneself - Getting away from the situation to regroup and calm down or just not to deal with things right now
  • Engaging another in conversation to direct attention to them, away from you - May be followed by retreat or distancing oneself from situation
  • Lack of engagement in group dynamics
  • Giving answers that are as short as possible
  • Showing little interest in conversation or activity at hand
  • Higher-pitched voice than normal
  • Strained, uneven, or breaking voice

  • Focusing on the source of irritation, rather than on solving the problem
  • Replaying the event/source of annoyance over and over, often getting angrier each time
  • Making an effort to think about something other than the source of annoyance in an attempt to calm oneself

Body

Hands/Arms/Shoulders

  • Crossing arms, especially when standing
  • Holding up head with hand or fist
  • Resting head in hands, as if overwhelmed and no strength
  • Drumming/Hammering fingers on a flat surface or on the body, such as thigh or arm
  • Holding hand up in "stop" gesture, as if to say, "I can't deal with this right now."
  • Applying more pressure with hands than needed, such as clutching a cell phone tightly, pushing down too hard on a pen/pencil, white-knuckled grip on steering wheel
  • Tense muscles in hands, arms, shoulders
  • Wringing hands
  • Popping knuckles
  • Using non-verbal gestures to avoid engaging in conversation, especially if afraid that you might say something you'd regret later
    • Shrugging
    • Using hand/arm gestures (like holding hands out, palm-up or waving off someone)
    • Throwing hands up, as if to say, "Who knows?" or "Who cares?"
  • Holding hand or fist in front of mouth, as if subconsciously silencing oneself

Legs/Feet

  • Tapping a foot to burn off energy or to signal annoyance to others, especially if mixed with impatience
  • Shifting weight back and forth from one foot to another, as if the mind is communicating, "I want to get out of here."

  • Nervous pacing or walking aimlessly

Head/Neck

  • Throbbing vein in forehead or neck
  • Cocked head
  • Head shaking
  • Tense muscles in neck or jaw

  • Head and/or eyes dart this way and that, as if searching for a way to retreat the situation
  • Nodding guardedly, without appearing too enthusiastic or approving
  • Nodding/shrugging/gestures to avoid verbally communicating

Face/Forehead

  • Compressed features or pinched expression
  • Frown
  • Pained smile or grimace that doesn't reach all the way to the eyes
  • Sneering
  • Expressionless look, especially if working hard to show annoyance
  • Rubbing forehead, as if to soothe a headache

Mouth/Lips

  • Pulling lips tight into a thin line
  • Teeth grinding together
  • False smile, which may fade

Eyes/Eyebrows

  • Narrowing of the eyes
  • Narrowing a single eye, mixing skepticism with annoyance
  • Raised eyebrow(s) - one eyebrow only if skeptical or if other seen as inferior or inadequate
  • Blank stare
  • Rolling eyes, as if asking deity for strength to endure
  • Quick upward glance (similar to rolling eyes)
  • Avoiding eye contact, especially with one with whom you're annoyed
  • Staring away or downward, as if to deal with things internally or to shut out the world while annoyance dealt with
